Patient Care  Technician

1.

Provide basic patient care under the direction of nursing staff (catheter care, bed making, transfer, bathing etc)

 

2.

Provide emotional support for patients and their families while

performing patient care.

 

3.

Set up equipment for patients like oxygen, masks, feeding tube, incentive spirometry and trouble shoot related problems.

 

4.

Monitor and record vital signs

a)  Blood pressure (manually and electronically)

b)  Take readings for Pulse, Pulse oximetry, Apical pulse, Apical‐radial deficit.

c)  Respirations (manually and electronically)

d)  During blood transfusions.

 

 

5.

Patient Condition

  1. Monitor, and record, and measure urine output, emesis.
  2. Monitor and record functions of digestion (e.g., bowel movements, portions of meal consumed).
  3. Report any new changes in the patient’s condition (e.g., level of consciousness, shortness of breath).
  4. Identify and report changes in skin integrity.
  5. Recognize visual abnormalities in patient specimens (e.g., stool, sputum, urine, emesis).
  6. Weigh a patient (e.g., standing, wheelchair, or bed scales).
  7. Observe for and report edema, patient pain.

 

 

6.

Patient Treatment

  1. Follow plan of care ordered for the patient.
  2. Assist with restorative rehabilitation activities (e.g., bowel and bladder retraining).
  3. Remove peripheral IVs.
  4. Use adaptive devices for activities of daily living (e.g., feeding and dressing devices).
  5. Check dressings for increased saturation and changes.  
  6. Perform dressing changes.  
  7. Apply immobility splints to patients.  
  8. Use devices to prevent skin breakdown (e.g., air mattresses, draw sheets).
  9. Apply sequential compression boots.
  10. Apply anti‐embolitic stockings like TED hose.
  11. Prioritize patient care based on patient needs.
  12. Perform first aid, CPR, and rapid response procedures.

 

 

6.

Patient Care

  1. Perform care related to the special needs patient (physically, and or mentally impaired).
  2. Perform passive Range of Motion  for the patient.
  3. Administered nebulizer treatments to patients.
  4. Assist patients with orthotic or prosthetic devices (e.g., hearing aids, dentures, artificial eyes, or extremities).
  5. Assist transfer of patient to another unit or facility.
  6. Transfer a patient using a mechanical lift.  
  7. Manually lift and transfer a patient.  
  8. Keep patient area clean.
  9. Provide skin care (e.g., repositioning, applying creams).
  10. Perform or assist with ostomy care.
  11. Assist the patient with coughing, deep‐breathing exercises.
  12. Assist patient with taking self‐administered prescribed medications.
  13. Perform home health, hospice/palliative aide care services.

Must have completed phlebotomy technician and certified  nurse aid course and EKG program.
